If you’re on this page you might wonder how to import a Figma file.

The process itself is quite easy, and it works for both figma files that you downloaded online or that a colleague might have sent your way.

So, without further ado, let’s get started.

How to Import a Figma file

Now’s let’s see how you can export a figma file in your Figma account.

STEP 1

As a first step, you will need to locate your new .fig file (this is the extension of Figma files are called) and open up Figma.

‍

Unzip the Figma file if required, since you should have the raw .fig file ready to be imported (zip files won’t be recognized).

STEP 2

Login to Figma and go under draft by selecting it on the left side of the control panel.

‍

⚠️ Important: do not open any existing or new project, since the import feature will not work inside of a project.

Once you are inside the draft location, simply drag and drop the Figma file here or, alternatively, click on the top right Import button and select the file from your computer.

At this point you will notice a popover that notifies you that the design file i being uploaded - once this process it’s done, you will see a green checkmark and confirmation that the .fig file was uploaded correctly.

As you can see, so far the entire process was simple and fast!

At this point, you can open your new design file and you have access to the Figma file in it’s entirety. After making the required changes, you can again export the file to share or save it as a backup (although, as we’ve seen in a recent article, Figma does have an autosave feature).

Why do you need a .fig file to import?

You can export your designs from Figma in a variety of file formats, including JPED, PNGs, PDFs and SVGs.

Exporting helps you share content with others, move content between tools, and save copies of your designs outside of Figma.

Figma design files can be exported to .fig extension files.

These files can be saved in your computer and you can use them offline as well.

Just use the above mentioned methodology to import files successfully and you will be set.

Why do you need to import Figma file?

You might want to make changes to a design that is created by someone else.

Having the Figma design file (.fig) will help you to start right away.

You can Import the Figma file into your account and start working.
